2 Co-organized Conferences
DRS2024, hosted by CAMD, took place in Boston in June. Center for Design staff and core faculty were integral to the planning and management of the conference. They, along with members of CAMD faculty and staff, organized all aspects of the conference, from keynotes and workshops to Fringe events and the PhD Consortium. For full details of the positions held by CfD members, visit the website.
IEEE VISAP 2024 took place online in October. The Center for Design hosted watch parties of several conference presentations for local attendees and presenters. CfD core faculty member Pedro Cruz was a General Chair of the conference, and affiliate member Todd Linkner was a Design Chair. The Art + Design department within CAMD was a key sponsor of the conference.
1 New Global Learning Experience
The College of Arts Media and Design and the Center for Design sponsored twelve students to attend Milan Design Week in April 2024. Since its inception in 1961, Milan Design Week has served as one of the most significant events in the design industry, attracting designers, innovators and a variety of industry sectors from all over the world.
Led by CfD Founding Director Paolo Ciuccarelli, the selected students had an ambitious schedule during the week. They observed and analyzed how design is represented and experienced at the urban scale, preparing to create two reports from their interpretations of events and exhibitions. They developed an editorial report describing the outcomes of field research and drafting guidelines for the design of effective products-related urban events and experiences. The second report consisted of a one-minute video that synthesized their experiences, acting as a teaser for those who may attend in the future. View their reports on the website.
While 2024 was the inaugural edition of the new global learning experience for the college, the CAMD and Center for Design teams intend to continue the initiative each spring.

4 Organized & Sponsored Exhibits
The Secret Life of Sneakers
Sponsored by the Center for Design
This exhibition by CAMD IDDV Assistant Professor Carmen Hull and her team was on display at TwoTwelveChelsea in Chelsea, MA. In collaboration with The Footwear Collective, the team built a physical data installation that visualizes the sneaker lifecycle. Visitors were encouraged to bring a pair of sneakers to recycle.
Learn more about the exhibit here.
A Perfect Storm
Created by Pedro M. Cruz, Chloe Hudson Prock and Gregory Gold
“A Perfect Storm: Visualizing Climate Risk and Emissions” was on display at Existência Numérica in Rio de Janeiro. This data visualization project was created by Chloe Hudson Prock and Gregory Gold, with the support of their advisor, CfD core faculty member Pedro M. Cruz. Using data on global climate risk and greenhouse gas emissions, the team emphasized the inequality between countries contributions to climate change, and their experience of climate-change disasters. The purpose was to enable reflection on this disparity, as well as on how the capitalist model of unlimited growth in a world of finite resources is driving us towards catastrophe.

Milan Design Week 2024
Curated by Paolo Ciuccarelli
Center for Design Founding Director Paolo Ciuccarelli was the scientific curator of Milan Design Week 2024. In partnership with Publicis Group, he created a data-driven, AI-supported communication campaign platform. The campaign seamlessly merged art, design, and technology to articulate the stories around the event. The artworks expressed, interpreted and enriched the iconic event and its culture. By blending human creativity with AI's power, the dynamic visuals represented the evolving conversations around and about design, becoming dynamic vessels for experiences, memories and emotions.

Pop-Up Putt Putt
Sponsored by the Center for Design
The final project for the students of Physical Computing with CfD Affiliate Member Rahul Bhargava was to create a tabletop miniature golf course. These holes used monitors and sensors to make playable, interactive versions of mythological stories. They moved, lit up and played sound effects. The students showcased their projects at the Boston CyberArts Gallery and visitors could play the course.
